You Can Write A Successful Book

Five Key Questions For Authors

Imagine if there were a really hot book circulating around, spreading like wildfire, and you were the author! How would that effect your business? When I’m asked to ghost write or edit a book, I begin by asking the author some basic questions to help me write their book more effectively. I’ve asked these questions so often that I thought I’d finally create a Lightning Tip for would-be authors. Suppose you are writing a “how to” book:

  • How To Make Your First Million
  • How To Overcome Depression
  • How To Deliver An Effective Speech
  • How To Live Healthy Longer

Let’s say that you have a winning philosophy, a list of principles for success, and you’re ready to write. Answering the following questions could make the difference between a book that has only one admiring reader—you, and a book that turns out to be a blockbuster success. Use the questions below to help focus your thinking and get yourself started on a book that will

  • Have a ready market
  • Capture your reader’s attention
  • Hold their interest
  • Deliver incredible value
  • Promote your credibility and your business
  • Win new clients

Five Key Questions For Authors

  1. Who is your intended reader? Focus this as much as possible. An answer like, “everybody who could benefit from seeing their life turn around for the better by applying the principles I have to teach” will not result in a powerful book. Powerful books are targeted to a specific audience. Example: Directors of non-profit organizations who would like to employ these principles to turn their organizations around. They feel alone, burned out, torn between board of directors, donors, and the people they are trying to serve…
  2. What do you know about your intended reader? Describe their pain, their need. Who do they serve? What are the major challenges they face?
  3. Where do you find your audience so that you can get their attention? What publications do they read? In what organizations are they members?
  4. What stories and illustrations can you use from the experience of your reader? Bring your teaching to life in the mind of your reader. Build a list of stories and illustrations, and employ a story or an illustration for each of your points. The goal is that your reader can say, “That’s me! She understands me. She’s been there, or knows what it’s like. She’s overcome my pain and is here to show me how I can make it.
  5. What’s your plan for your reader? Fill in the blanks for the following sentence: “Here’s a step by step plan any (target market) can apply to overcome (major pain/problem) and experience (benefits).
