A No-Fail Way To Capture Interest – The “Minute Mentor”

Early in my career I had an amazing mentor. He was the model of all I hoped to be. I spent hours with him—listening to every presentation he gave, devouring everything he wrote, listening…listening…listening. One day he totally shocked me by saying, “David, you’re one of the most interesting people I know.” “What do you mean,” I replied in astonishment. Drawing a few casual puffs from his crafted wood pipe, he said, “I find you interesting because you’re so interested in me.”

Do you want to write and speak about your business in a way that captures people’s attention and holds them on the edge of their chair? The first step is not a set of copywriting tricks for finding the magic words. The first task is one of attitude. Cultivate an attitude of genuine interest in others.

We have lots of opportunity to practice! There is something unique and amazing about every person. My five-year-old grandson has five years of experience I have never had. He has things to teach me. How much more with every adult I meet. In every encounter with another person, dedicate yourself to discovering the unique value of that person, genuinely believing that you are about to learn something amazing, wonderful, and of extreme importance. Consider that person your “minute mentor”. I guarantee, if you do this simple thing, your attitude of wonder and interest will begin to show in the way you write and speak about your business. And, as a result, you will find people more and more interested in what you have to say.

Here’s a simple task that will make an immediate difference. This week attend a local networking group. Have a goal of spending five-ten minutes with three people individually.

  • Make it a point to discover at least one item of unique value about each person.
  • Once you’ve identified that item, name it. Let your “minute mentor” know what you have learned.
  • If they don’t, in turn, ask you about yourself, and listen with heightened interest to what you have to say, check their pulse!

Here are some excellent places to meet a “minute mentor”:

Try email marketing. It's fast, easy and inexpensive so you can communicate with your market audience on a regular basis and stay "top of mind" to them. I use iContact. It has all the features you need:

  • Contact management, ability to create and format emails, blogs and RSS feeds, autoresponders for series, a sign-up form for your Web site, excellent training in how to use the tool and more.

Please take a look at this powerful tool. It is central to a successful email marketing program. Don't try to patch your email marketing together with Outlook or some other less powerful program. It simply won't work.
