Brand yourself and gain control of your contact base.

This SuddenlyInSite issue is especially for those who work under someone else's business name. For example, you're a Realtor working for a large Realty organization, or, you market health suppliments as an affiliate of an organization...you know if you're in that kind of business arrangement.

Working under the parent company name, there are benefits to you: You get the name of the organization, a widely recognized product, they probably give you your own Webpage and perhaps even an e-zine program.

But can you afford the cost?:

  • You are pouring all your efforts into building someone else's name.
  • You are probably limited in what you can say and what you can market.
  • You are selling little rubber food containers when you could be marketing kitchen design and organization.
  • You are selling suppliments when you could be marketing yourself as a wellness coach.
  • You are limited in your business arrangements and alliances, your pricing, your advertising.

Can you become link partners with others, exchanging links? Probably not. Huge limitation! You are driving all your hard-earned contacts to someone else's Web site instead of building your own! When all is said and done, if you leave the parent company, you may walk away with nothing. And what if the parent company changes management, or policy, or goes out of business? It can get scary fast!

So, how do you gain the benefits of a recognized name, along with the tools, and yet create a business that is your own? The solution to this problem is, Brand Yourself!

For example, many Realtors I know are branding themselves and creating their own name. They may still work under a larger umbrella company, but they have their own Web site and are building their own contact list. This gives them mobility and a more certain future. Other affiliates are doing likewise.

Now don't run away from your current affiliate relationship. That is not the intent of this article. Rather, continue with the company, but at the same time brand yourself. Build your own Web site and begin building your own client base. What is the core value you bring to your market? I doubt it is bottles of health supplements. Rather, it is your vision for total wellness and your personal service. And that Realty group: No matter how good they are, management can change, policy can change. And, when all is said and done, people buy from people, not from corporations. Therefore, brand yourself, your personality, your experience, your client process...you!

You've seen other top Realtors do it. When is it your turn? Get started branding yourself. It takes time and nurturing, like growing a garden, so don't put it off! You can begin right now.
